Body-safe sex toy materials are the non-porous ones that survive a real cleaning: platinum-cure silicone, stainless steel, borosilicate glass, and ABS plastic, which is wiped rather than boiled. Porous materials such as jelly, PVC and TPE hold on to residue however carefully you wash them. The term itself is unregulated, so the specificity of a maker's own documentation is most of what a buyer has to go on.

  • Check the care instructions. Anything you are told to boil is being claimed as silicone, steel or borosilicate glass.
  • Smell it when it arrives. Cured silicone has no smell. A chemical or plastic smell means plasticisers.
  • Compare the identical sentence across three sellers. Copy-pasted wording means nobody verified anything.

An editorial reading, not a test: four materials can be sterilised and the rest cannot, and because nobody regulates the phrase body-safe, how specific a maker is willing to be in writing is most of the evidence a buyer actually has.

Four materials in this category can be cleaned until nothing biological survives on them: platinum-cure silicone, stainless steel, borosilicate glass, and ABS plastic with one caveat. Everything else in common use is porous to some degree. That single split decides more about a toy than its shape, its size or the name on the box, and a maker either documents which side it sits on or talks around the question.

What body-safe actually means

Legally, nothing. There is no regulator that defines the phrase, tests against it, or takes it away from a company using it wrongly. It is a marketing term, and it appears on genuinely excellent products and on plasticised jelly alike.

What people mean by it, when they are being careful, is a narrower and more useful claim: the material is non-porous, chemically stable at body temperature, free of the plasticisers that leach out of soft plastics, and able to survive a real cleaning process without degrading. Each of those four can be argued about with evidence. The phrase on its own cannot.

Non-porous is the foundation. A non-porous surface has no microscopic structure for moisture, lubricant residue or bacteria to settle into. You wash it, and the surface is the whole story. A porous surface has a texture below what your eye resolves, and things get down in there and stay.

Platinum-cure and tin-cure are not the same silicone

Silicone is not one material. It is a family, and the division that matters most for an insertable is how the rubber was cured.

Tin-cure silicone, sometimes called condensation cure, uses a tin catalyst and releases a small amount of byproduct as it sets. It shrinks slightly, it stays chemically a little unfinished, and given enough years it can revert at the surface, going tacky or weeping. It is cheaper, and a great deal of low-cost moulding uses it.

Platinum-cure silicone, or addition cure, uses a platinum catalyst, produces no byproduct, does not shrink meaningfully, and is far more stable once set. It is the system medical and food-contact work relies on. It costs more in raw material and more in process control, because platinum chemistry is fussy about contamination during moulding and a spoiled batch is a spoiled batch.

That is why platinum-cure carries more weight as a claim than medical-grade. Medical-grade has no single enforced definition in consumer goods and gets used loosely. Platinum-cure names a chemistry.

Watch for silicone blend as well, and for a listing that says silicone in the title while the specification field says something else. A blend generally means silicone mixed with a cheaper filler, and it inherits the weaknesses of the cheap part.

Jelly, soft PVC, TPE, TPR and rubber all sit on the porous side. They are soft, cheap to mould and pleasant to hold, which is why they never disappear from the market.

The consequence is less dramatic than the warnings suggest, and it helps to state it precisely. You can wash a porous toy. Soap and warm water will take most of what is on it off. What you cannot do is take all of it, because some of it is now inside a surface your cloth never touches, and it is still there next time. Over months, a porous toy accumulates. That is why they eventually smell, why they can turn sticky, and why they are a poor choice for anal use, where the bacterial load is higher and reintroducing it matters more.

Soft plastics also need plasticisers to stay soft, and plasticisers migrate outward. That oily film on a jelly toy left in a drawer is the plasticiser arriving at the surface, and so is the chemical smell. Certain phthalate plasticisers are restricted in children’s products across several markets. Adult products generally sit outside those rules.

One caveat on ABS. It is non-porous and it wipes clean reliably, but it is a thermoplastic and will deform in a pan of boiling water. ABS gets sanitised, not boiled. Steel, borosilicate glass and platinum silicone take the boiling water without complaint.

These products are not regulated as medical devices in most markets. No agency reviews a material declaration before it appears on a website. There is no ingredient list requirement of the sort cosmetics carry, no mandatory disclosure, and no real penalty for describing a TPE toy as silicone in a marketplace listing that will be delisted and relisted under a different seller name next month.

So a buyer’s actual evidence comes down to this: what the maker publishes, how specific it is, whether it stays consistent across the whole product line, and whether the care instructions match the material being claimed. That is a thinner foundation than most people assume they are standing on, and it is the reason this section exists. We have not tested anybody’s products. We read what companies put in public and tell you what it does and does not prove.

What a maker publishing in good faith tells you

A company with nothing to hide about materials tends to publish the same short list, and the absences are as informative as the entries.

The specific chemistry rather than the family. Platinum-cure silicone rather than silicone. Borosilicate rather than glass. Stainless with a grade attached rather than metal.

Care instructions that only make sense if the claim is true. Telling you to boil something is a strong signal, because a company that knows its product is TPE is not going to tell you to put it in a pan of water.

Consistency. If the material line appears on every product page in the same words, that is a policy. If it appears on the expensive items and quietly vanishes from the cheap ones, that is a marketing decision, and you have just learned what the cheap ones are made from.

Numbers. Dimensions, weight, ring diameters, hip ranges. Material honesty and measurement honesty travel together, and a company that will not publish either is telling you it prefers you not to compare.
